How to write an amount in words on a cheque

Banks ask for the amount in both numbers and words, and the two must match. Write the whole amount first, then the currency, then the small unit (cents, pence, paisa) if there is one. Many people add the word “only” at the end so nothing can be added after it. For example, 1,234.56 in US dollars is written as “One Thousand Two Hundred Thirty-Four Dollars and Fifty-Six Cents Only”.

Lakh and crore explained

In Pakistan, India, and nearby countries, large numbers are grouped as 3 digits and then 2 digits. One lakh is 100,000 and one crore is 10,000,000 (100 lakh), so 12,34,567 is read as twelve lakh thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven. Everywhere else, the international system uses thousand, million, and billion, so the same number is written 1,234,567. Switch the numbering system above to get either style.
